We will walk along Broadway and Amsterdam Avenue between 147th and 157th Streets to see about 2 dozen murals in the Audubon Mural Project. The goal of the project is to create murals of over 300 North American birds in the northern Manhattan neighborhoods of Hamilton Heights and Washington Heights where John James Audubon spent the last 10 years of his life. Because the artists have license to represent the birds in any way that they choose to, there is great variation in the styles of painting. And the murals range from lovely panels that fill a window frame to spectacular works covering the entire side of a building. All of the birds painted have been identified as being threatened by climate change. So the project is designed, not only to help us appreciate the beauty of the birds, but also to make us aware of the challenges that they face. The Audubon Mural Project is a unique and evolving project and exciting to see!
We will also visit John James Audubon’s impressive gravesite in the Trinity Church Cemetery at 155th Street and Broadway.
