Join Bob Gelber, licensed NYC guide and member of the Guides Association, for a look back at the historic Meatpacking District. From its days as one of the largest Industrial complexes on the Northeast of the United States, to it’s reinvention as a trendy upscale neighborhood, today filled with fashion, restaurants and luxury living. Bob will discuss its transitions, as we walk the neighborhood. Our visit on the High line, tells the story of how a once elevated train transferred food from docks along the Hudson River to the 40 factories and warehouses, that lined the waterfront from the mid-19th century to its abandonment in 1980. From the Highline the group will continue on to Hudson Yards, the largest privately funded construction project in the history of the United States. This multi-billion dollar engineering site is a vast partnership with some of the greatest architects, developers and business people in the World. Built entirely on a platform above an active railyard, it is a combination of commercial real estate, shopping, restaurants and luxury condos. Meatpacking, Highline, Hudson Yards – All 3 of these transitions have completely transformed a once abandoned industrial corridor into a thriving reimagined waterfront.
